Kitcho pattern, snowflake ring
This pattern is based on snowflakes. Since a good year with abundant snowfall produces abundant crops, the snowflake pattern was also said to be the spirit of the five grains that brings a "good harvest".Although it was not until the Edo period (1603-1867) that snow crystals were discovered to be hexagonal through microscopic observation, the snow ring pattern has been used since the Heian period (794-1185).
