Kyoto Fan: Cypress Fan
folding fan originated in Kyoto.
Their history is ancient, dating back to the Heian period.
It is said that the first fan, the “hinogi-ogi,” was created by binding together wooden slips that had been used as a substitute for writing paper during the Heian period, when such items were considered precious.
One such fan, inscribed with the year “Genkei 1” and discovered within the arm of the Thousand-Armed Kannon statue at Tō-ji Temple, is considered Japan’s oldest hinogi-ogi.

Cypress Fan “Flower Cart” (Kano School)
This cypress fan is an original piece crafted from thin cypress panels, featuring a “Flower Cart” design created by combining the latest techniques in modern maki-e with the craftsmanship of Kyoto artisans. It is based on a “Flower Cart” motif painted by a Kano-school artist in the early Edo period

Hinamatsuri Dolls' Cypress Fan
The dolls in the Hina doll display also hold hinogi fans. However, since hinogi fans themselves are heavy, versions made of paper and bamboo were developed to make them easier to carry. They also appear in Heian-period picture scrolls.
