Kyoto folding fan Cypress Fan “Hanaguruma”

folding fan was born in Kyoto.

Its history is ancient, dating back to the Heian period.

It is said that the first fan, the “hinogi-sen,” was created by binding together wooden slips that were used in place of paper for record-keeping during the Heian period, when such items were considered precious.

One such fan, inscribed with the year “Genkei 1” and discovered inside the arm of the Thousand-Armed Kannon statue at Tōji Temple, is considered Japan’s oldest hinoki fan.

This cypress fan is an original piece, featuring a “Flower Cart” pattern applied to thin cypress panels using the latest modern maki-e techniques combined with the craftsmanship of Kyoto artisans.
