Shike" means

Shike" means silk threads drawn from silkworms.
Shike-biki is a technique of drawing delicate striped patterns on fabric with a comb-like brush. Japanese paper is dyed with dyestuffs as it is, and "shikebi" is done on the fan surface by skilled craftsmen. Each fan surface is hand-drawn by craftsmen, and no two patterns are alike. {Each fan has a different look and feel.
