Cat Day: A Collection of folding fan and folding fan Fans
In honor of “Cat Day” on February 22, I’ve put together a collection of cat-themed items.
These are folding fan and folding fan round fan featuring cats painted by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. They are satirical illustrations in which Kuniyoshi—a cat lover—replaced the post stations appearing in *The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō* with cat-related puns.
Examples of these puns include
... Nihonbashi = “nihondashi” (Japanese soup stock), and
Totsuka = “hatsuka” (two-week period)—
so if you’ve spotted the “hatsuka” puns, be sure to look for them too.
