Uchiwa (Japanese fan)

Ijasen handles Edo uchiwa fans and Miyako uchiwa fans.

Large mangetsu uchiwa and small mangetsu uchiwa are Edo uchiwa. The one with the handle attached at the bottom is the Miyako Uchiwa.

Nihonbashi Horie-cho (present name: Kobunacho) is a town where many fans have been made since the old days of the Edo period (1603-1867). Unlike Kyoto-style fans, Edo uchiwa fans are made from a single piece of bamboo. Since the late Edo period, we have made many kinds of Edo ukiyoe fans using pictures by famous ukiyoe artists such as Hiroshige and Toyokuni. The fan you hold in your hand today is all handmade using the same techniques as those used in those days. Please enjoy the coolness of the Edo period.
