This is a fan of 53 cats from "Neko kaichi-ko gojusanbiki" (Fifty-three cats in love with cats), a work by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, an ukiyoe artist of the Edo period (1603-1868). Kuniyoshi was an unparalleled cat lover, and this caricature compares the inn towns that appear in the Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido to the behavior of cats in a pun.
